Mayo Business Awards
Castlebar Chamber was delighted to host the Mayo Business Awards in Castlebar, the county and university town of Mayo. Anne Conlon, President, said, “We are a town that doesn’t stand still. One can be educated from primary school to third level. We are proud to have large multinationals as well as a significant number of well-established, family-owned, home-grown, and medium- and smaller-sized industries. These organisations bring and support economic activity in the region, directly employing people and supporting spin-off industries.”
“Castlebar is well known for its entrepreneurial focus, with an innovation hub operating from the Mayo campus of the ATU. We are working closely with Castlebar Municipal District on various projects. We appreciate the collaboration and the work done in conjunction with the Head of Castlebar, MD, David Mellett. We are delighted he is with us today to celebrate Castlebar businesses”.
“Chambers, in general, and Castlebar Chamber, in particular, share a vision for the future of businesses in our town. Together, we are building a stronger economy that benefits us all. By supporting your local chamber, you’re investing in your business and a vibrant future for our entire community. Together, let’s keep building, keep innovating, and keep inspiring one another. Here’s to a bright future for Mayo’s business supported with your local chamber. ”
The Castlebar Chamber Award – Seamus O’Brien & Sons Builders. This award is one of two for which nominations were not sought. The Castlebar Chamber Award is a prestigious recognition celebrating outstanding business achievements in our community. This award honours local businesses’ dedication, innovation, and resilience that drive economic growth, create jobs, and contribute to the vibrant culture of Castlebar and the wider Mayo area.
Seamus began his journey in 1972 with a dream, his two hands and a strong woman, Chris, beside him. With a steadfast commitment to quality and integrity, he laid the first brick of a business that, over the decades, has grown and thrived. His company started as a one-man, and Seamus’s dedication has expanded into a true family business, with three of his sons joining him on this journey. Together, they have delivered countless residential and commercial developments, leaving a mark on the landscape of Mayo and a lasting impact on our communities. ”
Ms Conlon, later in the evening, presented The Neil O’Neil Award, which is a distinguished honour presented to a business that has demonstrated exceptional lifetime achievement and commitment to our community. This award is given to a business that have gone beyond expectations—not only achieving success but also uplifting others and strengthening the very fabric of our region.
Ms Conlon said, “It’s my great honour to present this award to a remarkable business that has excelled commercially and contributed immensely to Irish sport. We celebrate a company that started as a single shop in Castlebar as Staunton Sports in 1982 and has grown to become one of Ireland’s most respected sporting retailers.
One of its first major milestones came in 1998 when it acquired a legacy brand—one of Ireland’s oldest and best-loved sports stores Elverys. This transformative move grew the company’s presence overnight.
In 2019, they took another bold step by rebranding 46 stores nationwide as Intersport Elverys. Today, they are proud to remain 100% Irish-owned and operated, supporting a workforce of over 700 employees.
This commitment to local investment and employment is at the heart of their mission and has strengthened communities all over Ireland. And most importantly, remain rooted in the town they born in – Castlebar.
They are a true force in supporting Irish sport from the ground up. Whether it’s their sponsorship of the Mayo Men’s Senior GAA Team or their contributions to grassroots organisations across Ireland, they embody the spirit of teamwork and dedication that makes the sport so inspiring.
We proudly celebrate one of our Castlebar Chamber members for their business success, contribution to Irish life and sport, and relentless commitment to Castlebar.
This award goes to Intersport Elverys in recognition of their achievements today.”
Fort Wayne Metal was the well-deserved winner of the Resilience and Innovation Award, which was presented to Anthony McHale and his team.
